Overview
This Martindale Friction Testing Machine is designed as an integrated system with four sample clamps, allowing simultaneous testing of four samples. A friction device equipped with weights is driven by a motor to perform reciprocating friction movements on the samples, causing pilling, fuzzing, or wear. The instrument evaluates the fabric’s resistance to pilling and wear under a certain pressure, providing reference data for material selection based on the results.
Scope of application
Used for testing the wear resistance and pilling performance of various woven, knitted, and non-woven fabrics under certain pressure.
Main Technical Parameters
- Weight: 40 kg
- Dimensions (mm): 520×520×420
- Outer Shaft Rotation Speed: 47.5 ± 2.5 rpm
- Inner Shaft Rotation Speed: 44.5 ± 2.4 rpm
- Pilling Sample Holder Weight: 155 g
- Pilling Stainless Steel Disc Weight: 260 g
- Abrasion Pressure: 9 ± 0.2 kPa (for apparel fabrics)
- Abrasion Pressure: 12 ± 0.3 kPa (for decorative fabrics)
Controller operation steps
1. When the display screen enters the counting interface, press the set key
2. Enter the number of runs and press the OK key to confirm
3. Press the run key to enter the test state. At this time, the counter starts working and displays the current number of runs and status
3. Adjust the speed rotation and set it to the ideal running speed
4. If you want to pause during the test, press the stop key. If you want to continue the test, press the run key. The count will continue with the last value
5. When you end the current count and enter the next work, you need to press the clear key to clear the last result
Sample Preparation
1. Unless otherwise specified, the samples should be washed or dry-cleaned according to the fabric's intended use before cutting for testing.
2. The sample must be taken from a location at least 1/10th of the width of the fabric away from the fabric edge.
3. Do not take samples from creased or defected areas that may affect test results.
4. Use a sampler to cut a set of circular samples from the fabric.
5. Ensure that the samples do not contain identical weft yarns.
Environmental Conditions
The samples should be conditioned in a standard temperature and humidity environment before testing.
Test Procedures
1. Place the standard wool felt with a diameter of 140 mm and the sample with a diameter of 140 mm onto the abrasion table.
2. Attach the sample with its face down and the standard foam to the sample clamp.
3. Place the sample clamp on the abrasion table and insert the center axis into the sample clamp.
4. Set the number of test cycles.
5. After setting the test cycles, press the start button to begin the test. Upon completion, remove the sample for evaluation.
Rating
1. Adhere the sample to a cardboard using double-sided tape.
2. Evaluate the sample inside a rating box with an observation angle of approximately 45 degrees. Half grades may be given.
3. At least two people should conduct the rating independently, observing the sample from a distance of 300-500 mm.
4. The tested sample should be placed on the left and the original sample on the right.
5. The rating scale has five levels:
- 5 – No pilling
- 4 – Slight pilling
- 3 – Moderate pilling
- 2 – Severe pilling
- 1 – Very severe pilling
6. Average the rating results.
Test Report
1. Specify the testing standard number.
2. Record the rating for each sample and the average value.
3. Indicate the washing conditions before sampling.
4. Record the number of test cycles.
